Painting what words cannot hold.

Atelier JLK is the studio of Dutch contemporary artist Joliene Lauren Kos, whose work explores the quiet strength of femininity through figurative oil painting.

Working almost exclusively in oil on canvas, she creates intimate compositions where light, silence and the female form become a language of their own. Faces are often hidden, allowing the body to speak instead. A turned back, a lowered gaze or a subtle gesture invites the viewer to slow down and complete the story through their own experience.

Rather than portraying a specific person, each painting captures a universal moment. A moment of stillness. Reflection. Vulnerability. Quiet resilience.

Inspired by classical painting traditions yet rooted in a contemporary perspective, her work balances rich painterly surfaces with restrained compositions. Warm earth tones, soft light and carefully observed anatomy create paintings that feel both timeless and deeply personal.

Every work is painted by hand in her studio in the Netherlands using professional artist-grade oil paints and is created as a unique original.

"I paint women not to reveal who they are, but to leave room for the viewer to recognise something of themselves.

The absence of a face shifts the attention to posture, light and silence, where emotion often speaks more clearly than expression.
